Outside Circumstances Will Dictate Your Life - Only If You Let Them

author Posted by: garryaw on date Nov 5th, 2008 | filed Filed under: Self Impovment

The economic news these days is bleak to say the least. Are you a news junky? Do you make a habit of watching the evening news or perhaps browsing newspapers on a daily basis? I personally had to stop; I cancelled both of my newspaper subscription. I just couldn’t take all of the negativity anymore. If the story on the front page wasn’t about some senseless crime it was about how our economy and banking system is in ruins. Everyday; day after day after day. The story is always the same only the names change. Enough is enough already - repeated bad news will do nothing but weigh you down like a boat anchor.

Before you might even realize it, exposing yourself to bad news in perpetuity can do some pretty bad damage to the psyche. What could eventually happen is you’ll start to fall victim to the negativity. And if that ever does happen; look out. You see, victimhood is a very, very dangerous place to be. Anybody who allows themselves to be the victim of outside influences (such as bad news) is on a slippery slope to a lot of disappointment - don’t let this happen to you.

Here’s the deal - all you ever have needed and will ever need to succeed is already inside of you. What you’d need to do to bring out your greatness is believe in yourself and NOT let outside influences get in the way. This may sound simplistic but it is the absolute truth. Having a firm, committed belief in yourself is the foundation of everything you aspire to in life. Think about it, when you have a can-do attitude you’re giving yourself the power and energy to accomplish anything. The “how to” will always appear to the person who believes that “they can do”.

It really makes no difference what beliefs you may’ve formed for yourself. Your beliefs are what you will act on whether they are true or false. If you doubt your abilities, you’re defeating yourself before you’ve even begun. When you doubt your abilities your mind will attract circumstances to support your beliefs and eventually, you will fail. That, my friend, really is how powerful your beliefs are. Believe in yourself, have no doubts about your abilities and DO NOT let outside influences control you.

Unfortunately, many people go through life being envious of other people’s success and thinking that it’s out of reach for them. The really sad part is how they don’t even realize that they’re sabotaging themselves with such an attitude. A big part of this self-defeating behavior comes from your past.

Starting today, do yourself a huge favor by not allowing your past to dictate your present or future. Appreciate yourself as the unique individual you are and believe in your capabilities to accomplish anything you dare to dream of. And here’s the fun part - you can adopt whatever beliefs you choose. Only you and you alone can adopt specific beliefs about yourself and about your circumstances. Once you realize this, it will become very empowering for you.

Finally, change is rarely easy. Changing a lifetime of beliefs you hold of yourself is not an easy undertaking. Yes, at times it will take a great deal of work and discipline but in the end it is always, always worth it. I’d like to conclude with one of my most cherished thoughts - you can spend your time and spend your life anyway you choose, however, you can spend them both only once.

The Secret of Great Ideas

author Posted by: garryaw on date Oct 6th, 2008 | filed Filed under: Self Impovment

Many entrepreneurs spend their lives looking for the One Big Idea that will make them rich.

Most believe the idea will come to them in a sudden instant of clarity that is often called the “Eureka Moment”.

The original Eureka Moment is said to have occurred when the ancient Greek mathematician and engineer Archimedes discovered his law of the displacement of water while sitting in the bath – basically, Archimedes in, water out.

He was so pleased by this that he immediately leapt out of the bath and ran into the street shouting “Eureka” – Greek for “I have found it”.

Or so the story goes. Even if it is true, the point is that the Eureka Moment was only part of a long process of study, research, and reflection. This is true of nearly all Eureka Moments.

This has not stopped scholars trying to find ways to replicate the Eureka Moment, to find short cuts to thinking up the One Big Idea.

The study of “creativity” pre-dates even Archimedes, beginning with his fellow Greek, the philosopher Plato, who believed the ability to imagine ideas was innate in every human being and could be unlocked by proper education.

Although few modern neuroscientists would go all the way with Plato on innate ideas, his belief that every human being has a potential that can be unlocked by proper education is attractive to many today.

In recent times, a lot of effort has gone in to trying to promote “idea generation tools” or “creativity techniques”. Among the most popular are “association” – using the subconscious to link different concepts – and “brainstorming” – a “group creativity technique” which performs similar functions.

Yet are all these clever schemes barking up the wrong tree?

For a start, in most cases, as Archimedes would be the first to point out, there is no substitute for long study and hard work.

More importantly, from the entrepreneur’s point of view, originality is not necessarily the way to go.

It is unfair but the Great Innovator or the Great Inventor is rarely the one who reaps the rewards of his discoveries. It is the Great Adaptor who usually gets rich.

There are exceptions – Edison being the most obvious – but original thinkers are usually viewed with suspicion by the less imaginative masses. They often die poor. It takes a more conventional thinker to see how the original idea is relevant to people like himself and to sell it to them in their own terms.

Bill Gates has never made an important discovery of his own, but he is brilliant at applying the discoveries of others to the problems of the masses. He is therefore a great entrepreneur but not a great original thinker.

Similarly, the ancient Greeks, who were great original thinkers, were eventually conquered by the Romans, who rarely had an original thought, but who were great at adapting the ideas of others – most notably of the Greeks.

With this in mind, the Roman Consul Marcellus, who conquered Archimedes’ city, gave orders that the great engineer was to be taken alive.

Alas, poor Archimedes was so wrapped up in solving a mathematical problem that he failed to identify himself when challenged by a Roman soldier and was promptly killed by mistake.

This is truly symbolic of the fate of Great Innovators at the hands of Great Adaptors.

Nip Negative Thinking In The Bud

author Posted by: garryaw on date Oct 1st, 2008 | filed Filed under: Self Impovment

If we really want to analyze ourselves, most of our negative thinking was programmed in our minds when we were children. It could have come from a number of sources. Family, school, church, and even that beloved TV. Yes, I know what you are thinking, the TV? Yes, and especially if you are watching the news or something horrible before you go to bed. Whether you realize it or not this plants negative seeds in your mind.

It is a wonder that we turned out as well as we did. When I was growing up it ws the norm to be told “you will never amount to anything” or “you will never accomplish that, you are not smart enough” or “you will never attract a worthy mate, you are not good enough.” The list goes on. Whatever your source is, keep in mind that we don’t want to blame them. In most cases, these seeds were planted generations ago, and has been handed down. The good news is; these negative thoughts can be reversed, and here are a few suggestions to help.

First, erase the words “impossible” and “I can’t” from your vocabulary.

Start repeating to yourself that you can and that it is possible, and “I will.” This is the most important decision you can ever make. Your whole future depends on it. Change your thoughts and you instantly change conditions around you.

Picture yourself wrapping up all your negative thoughts about yourself and throwing them off a bridge.

You must get out form under these negative thoughts. You can’t be yourself, and it is impossible to make the right impression on others and to attract good things to you when you are carrying around negative garbage.

You must gain emotional control.

You can do this by freeing your consciousness of feelings of resentment, antagonism, hate, and like emotions toward others. These kind of thoughts are keeping you from thinking straight, and holding you back from progress. You must learn how to release the hold that past mistakes, now stored in your consciousness, have upon you.

Did you know that holding resentments or grudges or hates are poisoning your mind and your body, upsetting your physically making you susceptible to all possible diseases and illnesses. Yes! It can make you physically sick! Make a commitment today to get rid of this negative garbage in your life.
