For those of you that are heading to the Granite City, Aberdeen and the northeast of Scotland this summer, I have put together a list of some useful phrases that will help you to integrate with the locals.
This is a follow up article to For Those Heading to the Granite City This Summer, Learn The Language! which along with this article will have you integrating perfectly into life in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland.
Doric phrases:
Gie’s yir craak: Tell me your news.
We’ll need tae hae a newse: We must have a chat.
Come awaa intae the body o the kirk: Come and join the rest of us.
Taak’e wecht aff yir fee: Please sit down.
Steck in or ye steck oot: Eat your fill.
It gings roon yir hert like a hariy worm: It tastes good.
Gyad Sakes: I don’t like this much.
Yir een are bigger nor yir belly: You have over-estimated your appetite.
Dinna be a stranger: come again soon.
Gie ma door a chaap some time: Knock at the door some time.
Why don’t you make a lasting impression and have a wee bit of fun into the bargain and keep alive this wonderful local dialect. They aren’t difficult phrases to learn, you can do it !
